Why Proper Floor Preparation Matters: Latex Screeding Before Vinyl Flooring
Why Proper Floor Preparation Matters: Latex Screeding Before Vinyl Flooring
At SR Flooring, we believe that a great flooring installation starts long before the new floor covering goes down. One of our recent projects involved revisiting a floor that had previously been levelled by another builder, but the surface wasn't smooth enough for the new vinyl flooring that was planned.
Rather than installing the vinyl over an unsuitable surface, we carried out additional floor preparation to create a smoother, more suitable base, ready for the next stage of the project.
The problem with an uneven subfloor
When installing vinyl flooring, the condition of the subfloor is extremely important. Vinyl is a relatively thin and flexible floor covering, meaning it can show imperfections beneath it much more readily than some other types of flooring.
Small ridges, trowel marks, dips and rough patches can all affect the finished appearance. Depending on the type of vinyl and the severity of the imperfections, these defects may remain visible once the flooring has been installed.
An uneven or poorly prepared subfloor can also contribute to problems with the finished installation, potentially affecting the appearance, wear and overall quality of the floor.
This is why getting the preparation right is just as important as choosing the flooring itself.
Our approach: priming and latex screeding
On this project, the previous builder had already applied a self-levelling compound. However, although the floor had been levelled, the surface wasn't sufficiently smooth for the new vinyl covering.
To put this right, we took the following steps:
Assessed the existing surface to establish what further preparation was required.
Applied a suitable primer to prepare the subfloor for the new levelling compound, following the requirements of the products being used.
Applied a fresh layer of latex self-levelling screed to improve the surface and create a smoother, more consistent finish.
Left the floor ready for the next stage, with vinyl flooring installation planned for the following week.
The aim was to create a suitable foundation for the new floor, helping achieve the best possible finish once the vinyl is fitted.
Why is latex screed important before vinyl flooring?
Latex screed is commonly used in flooring preparation to help smooth and level suitable subfloors before new floor coverings are installed.
When correctly selected and applied, it can help address minor surface irregularities and provide a more consistent finish for the flooring installer to work with.
The benefits of proper preparation include:
A smoother finish: helps reduce the risk of imperfections showing through thin vinyl flooring.
A more professional appearance: provides a better base for clean, consistent results.
Improved suitability for installation: helps create the surface conditions required by the chosen floor covering and adhesive.
Attention to detail: tackles problems with the subfloor before they become visible in the finished room.
It is important to remember that not every subfloor is the same. The correct preparation method depends on the existing surface, its condition, moisture levels and the flooring products being installed. Primers and levelling compounds must be compatible with the substrate and with one another.
Don't overlook the preparation
It can be tempting to focus entirely on choosing a colour, pattern or style of vinyl, but the work underneath is what helps bring the whole installation together.
A new floor covering cannot hide every imperfection, and simply laying vinyl over a rough surface may leave you disappointed with the final result.
At SR Flooring, we take floor preparation seriously. If a subfloor needs additional work before we install your flooring, we'll explain what is required and why, rather than rushing straight to the fitting stage.
