The importance of preparing a subfloor properly
When choosing new LVT flooring, it is easy to concentrate on the colour, pattern and finished appearance. However, one of the most important parts of a successful installation is often the work that happens before the flooring is fitted.
At SR Flooring, we recently completed a floor preparation project in Kings Stanley, getting the subfloor ready for a Karndean LVT installation.
The project demonstrated why preparation cannot simply be rushed. Even when a floor initially appears suitable, small gaps, uneven areas and changes in surface level can affect the work required to achieve the finish needed for the new flooring.
Step one: Applying the correct primer
Primer is an important part of many floor preparation systems. The appropriate primer helps prepare the existing surface for the smoothing compound and must be selected according to the subfloor, its condition and the manufacturer's instructions.
For this Kings Stanley project, primer was applied before the latex screed.
Using compatible products and following the recommended application and drying instructions helps ensure that the preparation system performs as intended.
Step two: Applying latex smoothing compound
After priming, we applied a latex smoothing compound across the floor to help create a suitable base for the new LVT.
A smoothing compound can help address minor surface irregularities, but it is not a substitute for repairing significant structural problems or dealing with unsuitable or damp subfloors.
The correct product, application thickness and preparation method depend on the conditions on site. This is why assessing the floor before installation is so important.
Step three: Checking the floor after the latex has cured
Once the latex had cured on our Kings Stanley project, we checked the surface carefully.
We discovered that the compound had run through some small gaps in the existing floor. These areas required additional work before the Karndean flooring could be installed.
Rather than simply proceeding with the LVT, we addressed the affected areas using a suitable featherfinish smoothing compound.
Featherfinish allowed us to refine the surface and help achieve the smooth, flat finish required for the next stage.
This is an important point for homeowners: floor preparation is not always a case of applying one product and immediately moving on. The surface needs to be checked after the preparation materials have cured, and any remaining imperfections must be dealt with appropriately.
Why does LVT need a smooth surface?
LVT flooring is relatively thin compared with many other flooring types. Small imperfections in the subfloor can therefore affect the finished appearance, particularly with glued-down products.
An unsuitable surface may contribute to visible irregularities or other installation problems.
Proper preparation helps to:
Create a suitable base for the selected flooring.
Address minor surface imperfections.
Reduce the risk of defects showing through the finished floor.
Provide a better surface for the flooring adhesive where required.
Improve the overall appearance of the completed installation.
The exact requirements vary by product, so the flooring manufacturer's instructions should always be followed.
Don't overlook the preparation when budgeting for new flooring
When comparing flooring quotations, it is worth checking what preparation work is included.
One quote may cover fitting the flooring onto an already suitable surface, while another may include primer, latex smoothing compound and additional finishing work.
These are not necessarily like-for-like quotations. If your subfloor needs attention, allowing for the correct preparation from the outset can help avoid unexpected costs and delays.
At SR Flooring, we assess the floor and explain the preparation required for your chosen flooring before work begins.
