Combining modern flooring with original character
Traditional properties often have features that make them unique, from exposed stone walls and timber beams to original fireplaces and unusual room shapes.
These features can look fantastic alongside modern flooring, but they can also make installation more challenging.
At SR Flooring, we recently completed a Karndean LVT installation in Kings Stanley, where the finished floor needed to meet an original exposed stone wall with an uneven, irregular edge.
The customer chose a warm wood-effect design in a straight plank layout. The natural tones complemented the stonework, helping bring the room together without losing the character of the property.
Why uneven stone walls require careful cutting
A standard plastered wall generally provides a relatively consistent edge to work towards. Exposed stone is different.
Individual stones project at different points, mortar joints vary in depth, and the wall can change direction along its length. Simply cutting a straight line against this type of surface would leave noticeable gaps in places.
For this installation, the flooring needed to be measured and cut carefully to follow the contours of the original stonework.
This detailed work helps create a closer, neater finish while allowing the natural wall to remain a feature of the room.
Getting the details right
Careful fitting around irregular walls involves more than making a quick cut.
The flooring needs to be positioned correctly, the shape of the wall considered along the full edge, and individual cuts checked to achieve the best possible fit.
It is also important to consider the flooring system's installation requirements, including any necessary perimeter clearances or finishing details specified by the manufacturer.
The aim is to achieve a professional-looking result without compromising the correct installation of the flooring.
On this Kings Stanley project, the finished wood-effect LVT sits neatly alongside the exposed stone wall, creating a contrast between the warm flooring and the texture of the original masonry.
Choosing LVT for a traditional property
LVT can work particularly well in properties where homeowners want a practical flooring option that complements traditional features.
Wood-effect designs offer a natural appearance, while different colours and plank styles can be selected to suit the room.
When choosing flooring for a period or character property, it is worth considering:
Colour: Warm wood tones can complement natural stone and timber.
Layout: Straight planks create a clean, understated finish, while other layouts can produce a more decorative effect.
Practicality: Consider how the room is used and how easy the selected product will be to maintain.
Subfloor condition: The floor must be suitable for the chosen LVT and installation method.
Finishing details: Irregular walls, doorways, fireplaces and other features may require additional measuring and careful cutting.
The right choice depends on the property, the room and the customer's preferences.
Preparation still comes first
Although the stone wall was one of the most noticeable features of this job, the installation also depended on getting the subfloor ready.
Before fitting the Karndean LVT, we applied primer and latex smoothing compound. Once the latex had cured, some small gaps where the compound had run through the existing floor needed further attention.
We used a suitable featherfinish compound to refine these areas and help achieve the smooth, flat surface required before installing the new flooring.
This combination of preparation and detailed fitting helped us achieve a finish that complements the original stonework.
