From Uneven Floors to a Complete LVT Transformation in Stroud

When it comes to installing new flooring, the finished product is only ever going to look as good as the preparation underneath it.

This recent project in the Stroud area is a great example of why proper floor preparation, careful installation and attention to the finishing details are so important.

The customer was looking to transform the downstairs of their home with new LVT flooring throughout the living areas, hallway, kitchen and other downstairs spaces. However, once the existing flooring was removed, it became clear that there was quite a bit of preparation required before the new flooring could be installed.

Removing the Existing Flooring

The first stage was removing the existing flooring to expose the floor underneath.

Once this had been done, we discovered that there were noticeable gaps between the existing floor level and the bottom of the skirting boards.

This can happen when old flooring is removed, particularly where the previous flooring was a different thickness from the new flooring being installed.

Rather than simply installing the new flooring and leaving the gaps visible, we wanted to find a solution that would give the customer a much cleaner and more professional finish.

Preparing the Floor with Latex Screed

Because the existing floor wasn't suitable for the new LVT, proper preparation was required.

The floor was thoroughly prepared before applying a fibre-reinforced latex screed to create a much flatter and more suitable surface for the new flooring.

This was particularly important because there were areas that needed building up, and we wanted to create a consistent surface across the downstairs area.

The latex screed was applied throughout the required areas and allowed to cure before the LVT installation could begin.

Dealing With the Gap Around the Skirting Boards

Once the latex preparation was complete and the new LVT had been installed, there was still a small gap visible between the top of the finished flooring and the existing skirting boards.

One option would have been to remove and reposition all of the skirting boards.

However, this would have added considerably to the cost of the project, as it would have involved additional carpentry work, removal and refitting of the skirting boards and potentially decorating afterwards.

Instead, we looked at a more practical solution.

We used decorators' caulk to carefully fill and finish the remaining gap, creating a smooth transition between the skirting and the new flooring.

This meant the existing skirting boards could remain in place while still achieving a much cleaner finished appearance.

Why Small Details Matter

It's easy to think that installing flooring is simply a case of preparing the floor and putting the new flooring down.

In reality, there are often small challenges that need to be dealt with along the way.

In this case, finding a practical way to deal with the gap meant the customer didn't have the additional expense of bringing in a carpenter to alter all of the skirting boards.

The result is a much more continuous-looking finish, with the flooring meeting the skirting neatly rather than leaving an obvious gap.

The Finished Result

After the preparation work was completed, the new wood-effect LVT was installed throughout the downstairs areas.

The finished flooring now flows through the living room, hallway, kitchen, utility area and WC, giving the downstairs of the property a much more consistent appearance.

The natural wood-effect design works particularly well with the existing décor, while LVT provides a practical flooring solution for busy areas of the home.

From the original floor through to the latex preparation and finally the completed LVT installation, the transformation is significant.
