From Failed Subfloor to Stunning Grey Oak LVT – Another Transformation by SR Flooring Stroud
Not every flooring installation starts with a perfectly prepared subfloor. In fact, many of the projects we complete begin with repairing problems that have been hidden beneath the existing floor for years.
This recent kitchen transformation is a perfect example.
The Challenge
Our customer wanted to replace their existing flooring with a beautiful grey oak Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT). However, after lifting the old floor, it quickly became clear that the existing subfloor had failed and wasn't suitable for a direct installation.
Rather than cutting corners, we explained the issues to the customer and recommended the correct preparation work to ensure their new floor would perform exactly as it should for many years to come.
Preparing the Floor Properly
A quality flooring installation always starts with a quality subfloor.
To create the perfect base, we carried out the following preparation:
Installed SP101 flooring grade plywood across the existing floor.
Applied 4x4 mesh reinforcement over every plywood joint to reduce the risk of movement.
Primed the entire floor using a high-quality flooring primer to maximise adhesion.
Applied a full latex self-levelling screed throughout the whole kitchen, creating an exceptionally smooth, level surface ready for the new flooring.
Although this preparation isn't visible once the floor is finished, it's arguably the most important part of the entire installation.
Installing the New Grey Oak LVT
Once the latex screed had fully cured, we installed the customer's chosen grey oak Luxury Vinyl Tile.
The modern grey tones perfectly complement the existing dark kitchen units while helping to brighten the room and create a clean, contemporary finish.
To complete the installation, we colour-matched the finishing details by applying grey silicone around the perimeter, giving the floor a neat, seamless appearance while allowing for natural movement where required.
The end result is a floor that not only looks fantastic but has also been installed on a properly prepared foundation that will help maximise its lifespan.
Why Floor Preparation Matters
One of the biggest mistakes homeowners can make is believing that a new floor can simply be laid over an uneven or damaged subfloor.
Poor preparation can lead to:
Uneven flooring
Visible imperfections
Adhesive failure
Movement in the floor
Premature wear
Costly repairs in the future
At SR Flooring Stroud, we never take shortcuts. We always recommend the correct preparation because we believe every customer deserves a floor that looks great today and continues to perform for years to come.
