Case Study: Transforming a Failed Kitchen Floor into the Perfect Foundation for LVT
The Challenge
We were recently contacted by a homeowner experiencing problems with their kitchen and diner floor.
At first glance, it appeared to be a straightforward flooring replacement. However, once we began investigating, it quickly became clear that the previous installation had been completed incorrectly.
The existing click flooring had been laid directly over safety flooring, and underneath was plywood that wasn't suitable for flooring installations. As a result, the floor had begun to fail and couldn't simply be covered with new flooring.
The only long-term solution was to start again.
Stripping Everything Back
Our first step was to remove the existing click flooring, followed by the old safety flooring and the unsuitable plywood beneath.
Once everything had been lifted, we stripped the floor back to its original subfloor and allowed it to air out before beginning the rebuilding process.
Although this added extra work, it ensured the customer wouldn't experience the same problems again in the future.
Rebuilding the Floor Correctly
With the old materials removed, we installed SP101 flooring grade plywood throughout the kitchen and diner.
Every sheet was securely fixed before applying feather finish across all joints, creating a smooth and seamless base.
To strengthen key areas, we installed 4x4 reinforcing mesh, helping improve the bond between the subfloor and the smoothing compound.
Next, the entire floor received a coat of high-quality primer, ensuring excellent adhesion for the latex screed.
Finally, we applied a full latex screed across the whole floor, producing a perfectly flat, smooth and durable surface ready for the customer's new Luxury Vinyl Tile flooring.
Why Preparation Is So Important
Floor preparation is often overlooked, but it's one of the most important stages of any flooring installation.
Incorrect materials or poor preparation can lead to:
Movement beneath the floor
Lifting joints
Cracks appearing through the finished floor
Premature wear
Costly repairs
By rebuilding this floor properly, we've created a foundation that will support the customer's new LVT for many years to come.
