Reusing Existing Carpet: How Professional Carpet Fitting Can Save You Money
When replacing flooring, it can be tempting to assume that your existing carpet needs to be removed and replaced with something completely new. However, that's not always the case.
At SR Flooring, we recently completed a project where the customer wanted to reuse carpet and underlay they already had from another room. Rather than automatically recommending new flooring, we assessed what was available and worked out how we could make the existing materials work in the new space.
The result was a great-looking installation that saved the customer hundreds of pounds.
Making the Most of Existing Carpet
The customer had carpet and underlay from an existing room that they wanted to reuse. The carpet had already been purchased, so reusing it where possible offered a significant saving compared with buying new carpet and underlay.
The challenge was that the carpet had originally been cut for a different room, meaning the pieces didn't simply fit the new areas without some careful planning.
We measured the areas and worked out the best way to utilise the available carpet while keeping the finished installation looking neat and professional.
Carefully Cutting the Carpet to Fit
One of the main parts of the job involved re-cutting and adapting the existing carpet to suit the new room.
Rather than wasting usable sections, we carefully planned the cuts to make the best possible use of the carpet available.
This is particularly important when reusing carpet because every piece needs to be considered carefully. The direction of the pile, room dimensions, doorways and available lengths all need to be taken into account.
With the right planning, carpet that may initially look unsuitable can sometimes be reused successfully.
A Join on the Landing
To make the most of the existing carpet, we also incorporated a join on the landing.
While a carpet join isn't always the preferred option, in this situation it allowed us to use the customer's existing carpet rather than requiring a completely new carpet to cover the area.
The join was carefully positioned and professionally installed to achieve the best possible appearance while making efficient use of the existing material.
New Gripper, Existing Underlay
The customer also wanted to reuse their existing underlay, which was suitable for the installation.
We supplied and fitted new gripper throughout, providing a suitable foundation for the carpet and ensuring the carpet could be properly secured and stretched.
By reusing both the carpet and underlay, the customer avoided the cost of replacing materials that could still be put to good use.
Saving Hundreds on the Flooring
The biggest benefit of this approach was the saving.
Instead of purchasing completely new carpet and underlay, we were able to reuse the customer's existing materials, only supplying the additional items required for the installation.
This saved the customer hundreds of pounds while still giving them a professionally fitted finished floor.
It's a great example of why it's worth getting your existing flooring assessed before deciding that everything needs to be replaced.
