Why Proper Subfloor Preparation Is the Secret to a Perfect LVT Floor
At SR Flooring, we often say that the quality of your new floor starts long before the first plank is laid.
One of our latest projects perfectly demonstrates why professional subfloor preparation is so important.
The Challenge
Our customer had recently completed major building work, removing internal walls to create a large open-plan living space.
While the new layout looked fantastic, it left us with one significant challenge.
The floor was made up of three completely different levels, created from a mixture of existing flooring and the newly altered areas. Before any Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) could be installed, the entire subfloor needed to become one perfectly level surface.
Without correcting these height differences, the finished floor would have been uneven, joints could fail over time, and the beautiful herringbone design simply wouldn't achieve the flawless finish the customer wanted.
Building the Floor Correctly
Rather than taking shortcuts, we carried out the work properly.
First, the lower sections were carefully built up using aggregate to reduce the amount of levelling compound required. This creates a strong, stable base while making the build-up much more efficient.
Once the levels were close, we applied primer before pouring a full latex screed across the entire ground floor.
The result was one completely smooth, level surface, ready for the LVT installation.
Installing the Herringbone LVT
With the preparation complete, we installed a stunning English Oak herringbone LVT throughout the open-plan space.
Herringbone flooring requires precision from the very first plank. Every piece must line up perfectly to create the classic zig-zag pattern that makes this style so popular.
Because the subfloor had been prepared correctly, the installation flowed beautifully throughout the property with a perfectly level finish from room to room.
The finished result completely transformed the home, creating a bright, modern space with the timeless appearance of natural wood while offering all the practical benefits of Luxury Vinyl Tile.
