From Subfloor Preparation to Stunning Grey Oak LVT – A Complete Flooring Transformation in Gloucester
At SR Flooring, we always say that a quality floor starts long before the final flooring goes down. Recently, we completed a fantastic Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) installation in Gloucester, transforming a kitchen, entrance area and downstairs WC with a beautiful Grey Oak finish.
While the finished result looks fantastic, the real key to a long-lasting installation was the preparation work carried out beforehand.
Assessing the Existing Subfloor
When we arrived on site, the existing floor had been stripped back, exposing the concrete subfloor underneath. As is often the case, the surface wasn't perfectly smooth and contained minor imperfections, uneven areas and residue from previous floor coverings.
Before any LVT can be installed, the subfloor must be properly assessed. Luxury Vinyl Tiles are only 2.5mm thick, meaning any imperfections underneath can show through the finished floor over time.
This is why preparation is one of the most important stages of any LVT installation.
Why Priming is Essential
Before applying latex screed, we first applied a specialist primer to the concrete subfloor.
Many people overlook this step, but priming is absolutely crucial for several reasons:
Improves adhesion between the subfloor and latex screed
Prevents the concrete from absorbing moisture from the screed too quickly
Reduces the risk of pinholes and air bubbles
Helps achieve a stronger and more consistent bond
Ensures the latex performs exactly as intended
Skipping the primer stage can compromise the entire flooring system and potentially lead to issues further down the line.
Creating the Perfect Surface with Latex Screed
Once the primer had fully cured, we applied a self-levelling latex screed across the entire area.
Latex screed serves a vital purpose when preparing floors for LVT. It creates a smooth, level and solid surface ready for installation.
The benefits of latex screeding include:
Eliminating minor imperfections
Filling shallow dips and low spots
Creating a perfectly smooth finish
Preventing imperfections telegraphing through the LVT
Extending the lifespan of the finished floor
After application, the floor was left to cure fully before any flooring installation commenced.
The result was a perfectly smooth surface ready to receive the new flooring.

With the preparation work complete, we moved on to installing the customer's chosen Grey Oak Luxury Vinyl Tile.
The light grey oak design was selected to brighten the space while maintaining a modern and practical appearance. It complements the kitchen units perfectly and creates a seamless flow through the entrance area and downstairs WC.

Why Preparation Matters
One of the biggest misconceptions in flooring is that the finished product is all that matters.
In reality, even the highest quality LVT can fail if installed on an unsuitable surface.
Proper preparation through priming and latex screeding:
- Improves longevity
- Enhances appearance
- Prevents future problems
- Protects your investment
- Creates a professional finish
At SR Flooring, we never cut corners on preparation because we know it's the foundation of every successful flooring installation.
